Pricing
Pricing. Pricing. Pricing. An artists favorite thing to do! Pricing ceramics is always tricky. There is certainly the intrinsic value a piece has and then there is also the “I really like it when I made it and want to keep it forever” factor the potter has to consider. However, I try to keep my prices reasonable but there are a few factors that impact cost: difficulty of execution; repeatability, glaze application, firing technique, and travel time to deliver. Since I’ve become more efficient at producing my work, it enables me to keep my prices fair. What does change in cost, is the distance the pots have to travel to arrive at their destination. Pottery can either be hand delivered or picked up locally, shipped through a carrier, or delivery that includes a trip charge. The distance Ill have to travel determines the trip charge.
Why buy from me and not some store?
Some people critique pottery pricing and say: “I can buy this cheaper in the store!” I tell them: “Fine! Go to the store and buy a machine-cast $.30 piece of garbage with no warmth.” Or, you can buy something with LIFE! You can buy something that was cared for. Lovingly made. And joyfully given up! Then, you have a story to tell when someone asks you where you got your mug, or your dish set, or your favorite popcorn bowl. Then, that same joy in the creation of what you own is passed along to each person who encounters it. That my friends, is hand crafted clay!
